I cannot recommend Colin highly enough. Though I’m hesitant to do so because selfishly, I want him all to myself. I spent over 2 years searching for a technical co-founder before meeting him. From the very first time we connected, his enthusiasm for my idea was infectious. Having met so many other potential partners and not finding a match, I was admittedly losing faith in finding someone at all. I’m so glad I didn’t give up! Colin is so many things: thoughtful, intentional, strategic, professional, reliable, highly skilled, flexible, committed. In my experience, people who make the transition from development to management rarely succeed, and it takes an amazing person to be able to do both well. Colin is one of a very small number of people I have known who have done well at both.
I was Colin's direct report for five years. In that time, I watched him transform the way we wrote and deployed software, from a mess of buggy code, stressed operations people, and hostile gatekeepers, into a smooth end-to-end process that lets people be successful and focus on delivering value to customers. He is smart, and gets results.
Colin has many talents: he is a good listener, a fanatical advocate for his people, and a great judge of when to intervene or let people find their own way through a problem. But what I admire most is this: he continually thinks a few weeks in the future, and helps people prepare for - and influence - what's coming without overwhelming them with details. This is an incredible skill. It meant that as a development team, we were almost never caught off guard by a requirement, but could still focus on solving today's problems. I have never seen this done so well, and I wish it were more common in the industry.
